It's a shame they actually made an English version of this. Nelvana editted like two thirds of the series. However, the full series in japanese, is very well made.
Although severely retarded, there is a great deal of humor in this series which gives it a worthwhile look. The main character changing colours is funny every time.
I haven't seen the original series, but this movie is amazing. Even with the lack of graphical capabilities 20 years ago, I liked the plot and the romantic sub-plots were done very well.
