I very much enjoyed the show and agree with the review. It's the kind of show where the characters name drop Sturgeon's Law to each other. If Sturgeon's Law is the kind of thing that comes up in your conversations with your friends, then this is the show for you (and me!)
Unsurprisingly, I enjoyed the episodes where I was familiar with the titles discussed the most, even though, as Rose notes, the show is much less about the contents of the books than about being a reader (and discussing books with people.) I identify with Kanbayashi a lot, and Machida is both infuriating and feels like a friend (and I guiltily admit to have some of her same vices sometimes when it comes to being "culturally literate" about a work rather than reading it.)
I'm glad that we get a variety of niche shows like this. Some of them don't score extremely well on the encyclopedia average rating because they "not for everyone," but it hits the target audience well.

Yeah, if you get the references this show is hilarious where I can see it'd fall a little flat if you didn't. Never expected to see a Proust reference in anime, and even though my main reference point was Monty Python's "Summarise Proust" sketch the joke was still funny.
As an SF fan, all those references really nailed it for me.

I'm not even much of a reader at all and still liked this just fine. It helps that the conversations here often mirror or comment on typical conversations held in nerd circles that can be applied to more than just literature.

There is, I shall admit, something commendably novel to seeing a character bearing a sweatdrop while discussing Dylan Thomas. While this anime may not be great, this fact alone makes it a distinguished one.

Including scifi fan and holmesian was quite clever - pretty funny combination .

I think there's appeal beyond the bookworm angle. I red mostly history books, but nonetheless the show pokes at Fandom culture in general. You have that one person with a big niche, you have the total faker. Many of these exchanges can be translated out for other hobbies, and I think that's the strength. Good friends arguing about stuff they love in nice 3 minute chunks.

Goodreads culture? Gonna have to look that one up.
Anywho this is one of the shows that I looked forward to every Thursday and fit quite nicely as a bookend with Fune wo Amu. The last couple episodes were especially touching.

I don't know that this is a term people other than me use. I just meant the way that reading in the social media age has become a way of showing off how you smart you are, with Goodreads being a perfect example of that (since it's basically MAL for books). It was inspired by a recent conversation with a friend who said they don't use Goodreads because it feels like it's just there for people to show off, and that reading shouldn't be about that.

What with me being something of a bibliophile, and what with the total length of the series being <1 hour, I have absolutely no problem enthusiastically recommending this series!

This show was tons of fun. Sort of a literary Lucky Star, though with a smaller cast. It was lots of fun with the books they name-dropped. There were some real pleasant surprises among them (Pynchon! good heavens!).
It would invariably be the first show I'd watch on the day it came out.
