Cinedigm is a perfect example of a "Simply Uses Whatever They're Given" type of company that released anime, which resulted in a very up & down variety of releases. Something like Mononoke, which used Siren Visual's English translation, was a perfectly fine, if barebones, release & was even uber-cheap, making it a must buy. However, something like Saint Seiya or Slam Dunk, which just used either a lackluster pre-existing translation that Toei itself produced or didn't even bother with Japanese audio & subs (instead being dub-only), were not great releases, though at least Cinedigm did at least offer them via streaming, as well.
Hopefully Cinedigm will follow a similar sort of hands-off approach when it comes to DMR's services. |

Another acquisition. It always makes me a bit nervous when these companies get bought out by bigger ones, especially because RetroCrush is doing just fine for themselves.
They should push to get the RetroCrush channel included on Pluto TV - I am aware it has a block on the Anime All Day channel, but considering we already have channels that show Naruto, One Piece, and Yu-Gi-Oh! 24/7 and they did away with Anime All Ages there’s room and market for a retro anime channel. |

They have a tiny market cap of less than $200 million and own Bloody Disgusting and an animation studio called SD Entertainment that did the my little pony straight to video cartoons before MLP:FiM started. |

Sounds like a niche company buying another niche company. Let’s hope RetroCrush is unaffected, especially since they’re used by Peacock.

The Anime section including a livestream, mostly containing former Viewster titles, was added to their Website in November 2019. Currently, the website does not enforce any suitable region-restriction, granting overseas customers access to shows that the service obviously only licensed for North American (or general English) territories. |

Source? Few of their titles are subscriber only, and I can't imagine RetroCrush having more than a couple of hundred subscribers. Love to see their numbers; even if it's older shows, licensing costs add up when you have over a hundred titles. |

I am not optimistic. I really like RetroCrush's catalogue but I know a lot of people have ZERO interest in those kind of shows. The corporate side probably is looking to expand its audience, well duh, so it may opt to charge a fee to compensate for a smaller audience. |

Let's hope the DMR teams are left to continue doing what they're doing, just under the protection of a larger company. Cinedigm's own VOD services are pretty weak. ConTV has been left to decay. Early last year, they grabbed a few titles from ADK Emotions. It wasn't until last month that anyone noticed. To make matters worse, it seems those titles are only available on VOD through an Amazon Channels subscription. Subscribing directly through ConTV itself doesn't seem to grant you them.
It would also be nice if DRM's content syndication was still something that happens. It's not a big issue if your platform of choice lacked a Retro/Asian Crush or Midnight Pulp app when they shared most of their content with more mainstream services like Amazon Prime and Tubi.
Cinedigm has multiple channels on that service. |

Oof. That's a phrase you never want to hear from your new boss. I think the outcome's a bit less clear for end users: Cinedigm's been busy acquiring niche and dilapidated content services. With luck, they see value in RetroCrush as a unique brand and don't just cannibalize its catalogue for their other anime holdings. In that case, their other license sources could improve curation for RetroCrush itself. On the other hand, I'm guessing RC's apps and streaming service will lope along unless they're replaced with some skinned cookie-cutter VOD framework, which is a real shame: RC has some clever and distinctive branding, and anime services could always benefit from more distinctive feature development. |
