Former Shonen Jump Editor Starts Blog With Technical Advice For Aspiring Manga Artists
posted on by Kim Morrissy
Former Weekly Shonen Jump editor Yū Saitō (who currently works as Shueisha's "Character Business" section chief) started up a blog on the user-submitted manga website Jump Rookie! on Friday. The blog, which is titled, "A former Weekly Shonen Jump editor writes down the things he learned from manga artists," gives practical advice to aspiring manga artists regarding drawing techniques and so forth.
The first post explains how to make a manga page easy to read within one second, using Osamu Akimoto's Kochira Katsushika-ku Kamearikouen-mae Hashutsujo series as a positive example. Saitō's advice is to make sure that the image in the panel matches the dialogue in order to clearly convey what the words are expressing. The next post will analyze techniques from My Hero Academia.
Saitō joined Shueisha in 2005 and has worked as an editor on many Weekly Shonen Jump titles, including Eyeshield 21, Gintama, Kuroko's Basketball, Hunter x Hunter, Nisekoi, World Trigger, and others.
