Young Black Jack's Ōkuma Launches Another Black Jack Manga Spinoff
posted on by Karen Ressler
This year's June issue of Akita Shoten's Young Champion Retsu announced on Tuesday that Young Black Jack artist Yū-Go Ōkuma will publish a spin-off short, titled Black Jack ni Narimasen Deshita. (Did not Become Black Jack.), in the magazine's next issue on June 17.
The short, which will precede a new series, tells the story of Kurō Hazama if, instead of taking the name Black Jack, he got his medical license and became a private practitioner.
Young Black Jack is itself a prequel to Osamu Tezuka's classic series about a brilliant maverick doctor who practices without a license. Ōkuma and author Yoshiaki Tabata launched the ongoing Young Black Jack series in Young Champion in 2011 and Akita Shoten will publish the sixth compiled volume on June 20 in Japan. The prequel follows Black Jack when he was still a medical student in the 1960s.
