TV Asahi began streaming a preview video for Uchū Sentai Kyūranger, the 41st Super Sentai series, on Sunday. The video previews the cast in their characters' civilian costume.
Narrator: The fate of the universe lies in the hands of nine ultimate saviors. Uchū Sentai Kyūranger! Starts February 12 at 7:30 a.m.
In addition, the series' official website revealed the main cast for the show on Sunday, including the non-human-type Kyūrangers, which include:
Yūki Ono as Scales Gold (Libra) / Balance, a mysterious mechanical lifeform
Kazuya Nakai as Wolf Blue (Lupus) / Garu, a half-beast werewolf
Akio Ohtsuka as Ox Black (Taurus) / Champ, a robot wrestling champion
Hiroshi Kamiya as Shō Ronbō, the team's commander
The human-type Kyūrangers include:
Yōsuke Kishi as Scorpion Orange (Scorpius) / Stinger
Takumi Kizu as Lion Red (Leo) / Lucky
Sakurako Ōkubo as Chameleon Green (Chamaeleon) / Hami
Tetsuji Sakakibara as Swordfish Yellow (Dorado) / Spada
The new series will premiere on February 12 at 7:30 a.m. The series has a theme of "space" (uchū) and "constellations," and for the first time will feature a nine-member hero squad. (The word "kyū" in Japanese means nine, and the show's title harkens back to the first entry in the Super Sentai series, Himitsu Sentai Goranger. "Go" means five in Japanese. As heard in the video, it is also a wordplay on "kyūkyoku" or ultimate and "kyūseishu" or savior.)
The story features an evil organization called "Jark Matter" who rule the universe in the far distant future. The nine "Kyūtama" transformation items that harness the power of the constellations choose nine heroes to become the Kyūrangers and save the universe. Each member is an alien from a different constellation, and include not only human-type aliens but also android-type and werewolf-type aliens.
Manga artist Masato Hisa (Area 51, Nobunagun) designed concept art for the transformation suits in the series. Takayuki Shibazaki (Doubutsu Sentai Zyuohger), Teruaki Sugihara, and others are directing the series, and Nobuhiro Mōri (Shuriken Sentai Ninninger) is writing the scripts. The show's opening theme song is "Lucky Star" and the ending theme song is "Kyūtama Danching!," although the official website hasn't revealed the artists for either theme song.
The 40th Super Sentai series, Dōbutsu Sentai Zyuohger, premiered in February 2016.
Power Rangers Ninja Steel, the 24th season of the Power Rangers franchise, adapts Toei's 39th Super Sentai series, the ninja-themed Shuriken Sentai Ninninger. Power Rangers Ninja Steel premiered on January 21.
