Family of Woman Killed by Driver Playing Pokémon Go Seeks 34 Million Yen
posted on by Karen Ressler
The family of a 72-year-old woman who was killed in a traffic accident is suing the driver for about 34 million yen in damages. The driver, 39-year-old Tokushima resident Keiji Goo, was allegedly playing the Pokémon Go smartphone game when he hit two pedestrians with his truck in August. Sachiko Nakanishi (72) was killed in the accident and Kayoko Ikawa (60) sustained injuries.
The Tokushima District Court sentenced Goo to a year and two months in prison. Goo did not plan to appeal the ruling.
The case was Japan's first to involve a fatal car accident tied to Pokémon Go. A Kyoto driver was also found guilty for causing the death of a woman in a traffic accident shortly after playing Pokémon Go.
