Physical Manga Volume Sales See 12% Drop in 2017

The All Japan Magazine and Book Publisher's and Editor's Association (AJPEA) released a report on December 25 that estimated that the physical sales of manga compiled book volumes (tankōbon) from January to November 2017 have decreased by 12% from the same period in 2016. Physical sales of books and magazines combined amounted to 1.37 trillion yen (about US$12.20 billion), a 52% decline since the market peak in 1996.
Magazine and manga volume sales amounted to 600 billion yen (about US$5.34 billion), down 10% from last year, and books sold 715 billion yen (about US$6.37 billion), down 3% from last year. The report indicated that the magazine market has been in decline for years, with 2017 representing the market's 20th year in a row in decline.
